SUE COLEMAN from Perfect Rooms talks about the biggest trends to hit interior design in 2016…
The marriage of old and new is by now an idea ingrained into our lifestyles. From blending vintage clothing with high street buys to decorating with a mix of second-hand furniture and designer fabrics. And anyone who has bought their first home has had to beg, borrow and steal their start up furnishings and make them work together. If your home needs a refresh this new year why not try mixing items (not necessarily expensive) from yesteryear and giving them a contemporary flavour with contrasting materials, colours and textures to give a wonderfully confident and eclectic look? It can be difficult to pull off (no one wants to look like they live in a junk shop!), and at Perfect Rooms we can always assist you of course, but there are several ways of doing it, here are a few tips…
UNIFY THROUGH COLOUR
When merging pieces from different design styles, a coat of paint can easily help you unify furniture that otherwise would look at odds. Alternatively, take one or two tones from a beautiful cushion fabric or wallpaper and pick them out in other items throughout the room. The repetition of one shade will help to bring the design together. There are some amazing wallpapers and fabrics out there at the moment that can help transform your living space.
PICK A STATEMENT PIECE
From a beautiful lamp to a treasured possession, take something that means something to you and use it as your focal point from which to complement and contrast. Do you have a stack of pictures from time spent travelling? Why not make a picture wall using lots of different styles of frames, old and new? It’s personal to you, it’s fun and you’ll definitely spend more time looking at your photos than if they were just backed up on your computer.
Perhaps you don’t mind your hand-me-down furniture, but if you want something a little more interesting why not change its colour or if it is fabric, why not reupholster? Boring or out of date furniture can be livened up no end with a can or two of spray paint and/or a new set of covers in a fun new fabric. At Perfect Rooms we have a fantastic range of fabrics from all the top designers.
